ASU Horn Day 2018
I had the wonderful opportunity to play in a masterclass for Spanish horn soloist Javier Bonet last week at Arizona State University’s Horn Day! Every year we host a small conference for local horn players and college horn studios to attend, featuring a guest artist and several performances. I also played on the welcome concert with ASU’s full horn choir, a sextet (playing Daupraut’s sextet no. 6), and a quartet (playing movements I and II of Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for Four Horns). Javier Bonet was energetic and passionate throughout the whole masterclass, even going so far as to demonstrate the raucous cor de chasse tradition to make a point about loud, hunting-horn playing. In a feat of endurance, Bonet went on to play a demanding recital which included Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, an impressive new work for horn and piano titled Visions by Juan J. Colomer, and a host of personal arrangements of recognizable tunes, ending the recital with an encore of Saint-Saens’ The Swan. You can view the whole recital here. Many thanks to Dr. John Ericson for organizing an educational and enjoyable event, just one of the great opportunities I’ve been able to access while studying at ASU!
